Cobweb – Nepal’s First Band That Performed Heavy Metal Genre
For any band, surviving more than 20 years in the business is a big deal. But the challenges facing Cobweb’s survival have been rather more gruelling than most. Belonging from one of the financially poorest countries of the world, and have had to try to stay afloat during the country’s decade-long civil war, which ended in 2006. It wasn’t easy at all.
In 1992, A Hard Rock Band from Nepal called Cobweb was formed with five members. Cobweb is doing its jobs since the early ’90s and still rocking it. In 1993, they released their debut album called Anjaan, which showcased their heavy metal and classic hard rock influences. The first album ‘Anjaan’ was not a success. A raw rock record that took cues from western behemoths Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin, Cobweb stuck out like a sore thumb in Nepal’s conservative music scene. The first album ‘Anjan’ didn’t work too well as it was too heavy. In Nepal, people were just listening to pop at that time.
The second album Cobweb was received well with songs like ‘Maryo ni Maryo’ which shaped a path for Nepalese rock in the mainstream. The band is considered a trendsetter in the modern Nepalese Rock Music Industry. It was 1996’s eponymous follow-up, released while the members were still on the verge of adulthood, that saw the band gain mainstream success in Nepal, and become a cornerstone in the country’s then-emerging rock scene.
29 years and still running STRONG! That’s Cobweb for you guys. Legendary band for a reason.
