Health Workers Brutally Attacked in Bheri Hospital, Nepal
Physicians, nurses, and other front-line healthcare workers have been celebrated in many countries as heroes for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet not everyone appreciates their efforts and contributions. Since the beginning of this pandemic, headlines have also captured stories of healthcare personnel facing attacks as they travel to and from healthcare facilities in Nepal. Nepal has seen a spate of attacks in recent months on doctors and hospitals by relatives of patients who have died while undergoing treatment.
In the most recent incident, on Thursday, the relatives of a COVID-19 patient, Dilli Bahadur Rawat, who died in ICU in Bheri Hospital, Nepalgunj vandalised the hospital and assaulted healthcare professionals. Health workers were brutally beaten in Bheri hospital of Nepalgunj by the relatives of the deceased.
According to the hospital, Dilli Bahadur Rawat, a resident of Dang, died at around 8 pm on Thursday. Soon after his death, his brother Man Bahadur Rawat and other relatives brutally attacked the doctors and staff nurses. According to eyewitnesses, three nurses jumped from the roof to save their lives. According to the victim, the attacker tried to kill the nurse and the doctor by strangling them. Two more patients died at the hospital shortly after the vandalism and attack. After the attack, the hospital became chaotic and health workers dispersed. The hospital administration has stated that some serious patients have died due to this horrible scene.
