Miracle in Delhi: Man Receives New Hands in Landmark 12-Hour Bilateral Hand Transplant Surgery

March 9, 2024

In a remarkable medical achievement, a painter, who tragically lost both his hands in a train accident, recently underwent a groundbreaking bilateral hand transplant in Delhi, India. The surgery, led by the skilled expertise of Dr. Mahesh Mangal and Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala, along with over 20 other experts lasted for 12 hours.

This extraordinary achievement was made possible through the generosity of Meena Mehta’s family, the donor. Meena had selflessly promised to donate her organs prior to her tragic passing. She suffered from a brain haemorrhage. The generous donations of her organs – kidney, liver, and corneas – have transformed the lives of three others.

The 45-Year-Old patient will be discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Thursday after spending nearly six weeks in the hospital.

Raj Kumar, a resident of Nangloi and a painter by profession, was crossing the railway tracks near his house on his bicycle when the accident happened.

“I was limping due to a leg injury. I slipped on the tracks and my bicycle got stuck. I was trying to pull my bicycle with my hands when I was run over,” he recalled.

He lost his upper limbs in the accident. Kumar became dependent on others for his day-to-day activities, said Dr Mahesh Mangal, chairman of the Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery at the hospital.

In February last year, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, became the first hospital in north India to receive permission to perform hand transplant, said Mangal.
