Starlink Eyes Service Expansion in Nepal: Demonstrates Satellite Internet Service to PM KP Sharma Oli
In a significant development, Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service is reportedly exploring expansion opportunities in Nepal. Recent reports suggest that Starlink representatives conducted a demonstration of their satellite network for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other senior government officials in Kathmandu. However, the Prime Minister’s office has not provided further details on a potential launch.
Starlink has shown interest in addressing the needs of Nepal’s underserved regions, particularly remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure struggles due to the country’s rugged terrain. Despite this, no formal updates have been shared.
Gajendra Kumar Thakur, spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications, confirmed that there has been no significant progress so far.
Starlink’s satellite internet service has the potential to revolutionize connectivity, especially in hard-to-reach areas where traditional internet providers face limitations. It could greatly benefit sectors like education, healthcare, and tourism by providing essential access to digital resources. However, regulatory challenges remain, including Starlink’s struggle to secure the necessary licenses from Nepali authorities.
As the service prepares for a potential launch, it remains to be seen how the Nepali government will address these challenges, especially given Starlink’s requirement for a 100% foreign stake in its local operations.
