Nepal government plans to hike taxes on foreign films
The government of Nepal is planning to hike taxes and make strict rules on foreign films. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, is preparing to tighten the screening of foreign films through the forthcoming budget.
“It seems that something has to be done in the forthcoming budget to promote Nepali cinema. We are doing our homework on this,” said Ministry spokesperson Binod Prakash Singh.
The government is preparing to address the issue of tax hikes for foreign films and tax exemptions for domestic films. ‘Taxes on foreign films can be increased or taxes on Nepali films can be reduced. We are working on it, ”said Singh.
The ministry has shown interest after receiving complaints from Nepali filmmakers. Nepali filmmakers lamented that international films, especially South Indian films have dominated the Nepali film market. Last week, Nepali filmmakers submitted a memorandum to the Film Development Board demanding stricter screening of foreign films. A team of filmmakers met the Chairman of the Film Development Board Dayaram Dahal and handed over a nine-point memorandum.
