Thinle Lhondup – From Dolpa to Oscar Nomination
Thinle Lundup was a Nepali actor of the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Caravan‘ also known as’ Himalaya’.In 1999, “Caravan” was nominated in the best foreign film category in 72nd Oscar Academy Awards, a feat that no Nepali film has been able to repeat since. The caravan is a movie by French photographer Eric Valli. The movie captures the ‘yak caravan traders’ life pitted against the harsh mountains, nature, and culture in Nepal’s Dolpo region. Thinle became a celebrity in Nepal almost overnight after the release of the movie and over the world after the movie nominated for Oscars. Despite becoming popular worldwide, this celebrity status did not change his life. He was just what he was, Thinle was just living his ordinary life, struggled to make his living. Thinle died on April 24, 2016, in Kathmandu, Nepal from stomach cancer at the age of 72.
