December 29, 2020

A man in  India’s Rajasthan ‘gifted’ his wife three acres of land on the Moon on their eighth wedding anniversary. Dharmendra Anija bought land on moon as he wanted to do something special for his wife Sapna Anija. He tried for more than one year for the process to buy land in moon.

Many people including Shah Rukh Khan and other celebrities bought a part of the Moon, many people have started buying it for themselves. But, is it possible to buy a plot of land on the Moon that all of us crave?
The answer is no. That’s because, in 1967, the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom had come up with an international treaty, called the Outer Space Treaty, to prevent “a new form of colonial competition”. There are 109 countries, that have signed the Outer Space Treaty. The Outer Space Treaty aims to prevent any possible damage that self-seeking exploitation might cause.

According to Article II of treaty, “Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.” Even though it says “not subject to national appropriation by…”, it does mean no person can claim it.

There is, however, a The Lunar Registry which claims to sell land of moon, they sell the landing site such as ‘Bay of Rainbows’, ‘Sea of Rains’, ‘Lake of Dreams’, ‘Sea of Serenity’ and many others sites for sale. Any person who claims to own land on the Moon through The Lunar Registry is claiming so in compliance with the Lunar settlement initiative. The property claims are offered “in order to finance the exploration, settlement and development of the Moon and its resources”.

According to the Lunar Settlement Initiative, “95 per cent of the sale proceeds per acre of property shall be deposited in an escrow account that shall be controlled by an independently elected Board of Governors.” The whole point of this is to accomplish the goal of “returning humans to Luna, Earth’s Moon”. The purchase assists Luna Society International, its partners and affiliates toward the goal of “privatized exploration, settlement and development of the Moon”.
